What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach and engaging both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership. It is an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century.

Functional Medicine looks at the root cause of a chronic disease as opposed to only treating the symptoms someone is experiencing. It also recognizes that the patient's chosen environment may be a central piece to the puzzle in figuring out why they are struggling with their health. That environment can include their nutrition, exercise, stress, relaxation, and exposure to toxins. 

Functional medicine is very personalized and you are involved in each step toward your recovery. Many chronic diseases are preventable and even reversible. To do that one should adhere to their individualized plan addressing points such as diet, stress, exercise, genetics, and psychospiritual needs with their functional medicine team.

Functional Medicine is the practice of patient-centered wellness, not disease-centered care.  It is founded on a functional understanding of the way physical systems both impact and are impacted by your lifestyle. Your Functional Medicine Doctor will use diagnostic testing and in-depth biochemical analysis to help pinpoint where to focus. Then they’ll make both medical and lifestyle recommendations designed to address the root causes of disease. But more than that, your Functional Medicine provider will address you as a whole person — not just an isolated set of symptoms.  They'll take time to look at your history and the interactions between your genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors that can all influence your long-term health and wellness. 

How do we work together?

Functional medicine health coaching is client-centered, meaning I focus on your needs and goals before anything else. Often people have difficulties applying what they know to their daily lives. They need to develop the internal strength to commit to their goals and established long term sustainable healthy habits. Many people struggle with making significant changes to their diet and lifestyle. When you work with me I meet you where you are at that moment. I create a safe environment where you can get clear about your vision for you take the necessary steps towards your true transformation. I can help you manage chronic conditions, increase movement, and generally improve your physical and mental health. We can decide together where to begin and we will outline specific goals around points like nutrition, hydration, relaxation, sleep, detox, and exercise. I do not diagnose, make recommendations, or write prescriptions. I will guide you to tap into your own resilience, will empower you towards grater self learning, self awareness and becoming an advocate for yourself.

    “Mind-body medicine” refers to the field of study that examines how emotions, thoughts, imagery, and beliefs directly impact physical health, including DNA expression. This approach integrates researched and proven techniques to lower the stress reaction and generate a systemic healing response.

    Positive psychology is the scientific study of the strengths and virtues that foster well-being and make life worth living. Living a more meaningful and fulfilling life can create positive health outcomes, this orientation looks at how to nurture what’s best within us.   • The Art & Science Of Coaching
    This collaborative approach is centered around a partnership between you and me, client and coach. Together we identify and work towards your goals and deal with any barriers that arise along the way. This process can support you in moving beyond the diagnosis-prescription model and empower you along your path to better health and personal discovery.

I can work with my clients remotely or onsite. Initial consultation lasts about 90 minutes. Follow-up appointments last 45-60 minutes.
